I have been trying to find a rattle that showed up in April and kept coming and going all these months. I had the bike up on my jack and was changing fluids the other day. I stuffed a cloth between the trans pan and a skid plate to wipe up some gear oil that collected. Guess what came out with the first pass? Two chunks of gravel! Since then I have had no rattles at all. Just thought I would share.
Chasing those rattles can be an excerscise in frustration for sure. Yours is the most unlikely one I have heard of. Remind me of the old days when cars had hubcaps, drop a few stones on the hubcaps and laugh your hind end off as they drive down the road a little ways and get out to see what is making the awful sound. They see nothing amiss and drive some more only to stop and look again quite puzzled.

We used to toss a marble into the exhaust pipe hard enough to make it into the muffler. Would never come out and drive the owner crazy!
