With more compression from the upgrade to 103 and the 255 builds more cranking compression than stock cam, you have a double need for the compression release. Starter and battery may also be weak, but you need the compression release with this combo. A cam with 240 degrees of duration has much more overlap and doesn't build as much cranking compression and start much easier.

your advantage is- you understand how this stuff works....

there are just a few tricks with H-D's

---I believe there is a $35 toyota starter clutch that works. ( you can do a search for the part #- I believe the that forum member Dawg, shared that gem.

I'm lucky all my stuff just keeps on working- except the starter for the '53 is giving me trouble,

Mike

Heavy equipment mech here too. A bad comp kills the sprag clutch in stock starters. All ***** and MES make good starter clutches. Heres a break down of the starter.

I had pretty much the same set up on my old bike.. 07 SG 103/255s .. started great until I did the upgrade..(about 500-600 miles until dealer could get it in to do it) then I would get the start to spin then clank, bang, kick back, kick the starter out and grind, bang spin... etc...... I started cranking the thing like it was an old carb bike, (give it just a thought of a twist on the throttle right as I was spinning) it and it would crank with no problem. (don't give it too much... it really doesn't like that) while the starter clutch may have been worn also, first I slapped the SE compensator on there and ended all the banging and kicking back/out. Since it fixed the problem I never looked at the starter.

Couldn't disagree more. Both myself, and hundreds of other people on many threads on this and other boards experience exactly what the OP is describing with a bad stock compensator. Replacing mine cured the problem for good. Never touched the starter. Heck, if it's the starter clutch you can almost bet the weak compensator caused it.

Replace the compensator. You will sooner or later. Chances are, you won't need to do anything else.

It was the compensator.
