Personally, I like having the security system and I live in a place where one is usually not needed. I do travel a lot though. You have a pin for just about everything these days. It really is not as bad as some make it sound. I wouldn't let the forum scare you off. It is a nice option in this day and age.

Don"t. get the (pt#91672-07 H-D Security System Pager Receiver II rechargeable.) Had this on my 2008 fxdli Lowrider after a while, about 1 1/2 yrs. it would not take a charge, went to dealer they would not replace the battery (it went bad) told me to buy a new one for 90 bucks I politly told him where he could put it.

The best part is not having to bother with a key. Just hop on and go.

Yeah, I can't argue with this. Even after four years having the SSS I still get on the bike to do something without having the fob within working distance, if nothing more than push it out of the garage. I do it several times per week and you'd think I'd learn by now. Anyway, that said I would still rather have it just for the convenience of not having to lock the ignition with the key every time I stop someplace. I still lock it when staying overnight in an unsecured place, but the vast majority of times I do not.

To the OP: Unless this has changed since '07 you'll have to have the SSS and fob(s) programmed by the dealer. Mine charged their minimum (˝ hour) to do the job, which included installing the SSS (very simple), but I don't know of a way around it.

I also give a +1 for the popular $6 Radio Shack siren mod. Also note that if you buy the SSS from HD you will only get one fob, so if you want another consider buying it on Ebay. I found a used fob for $19 shipped and it works fine, but it will have to be programmed just like the one that came with the SSS kit, so it would be best to have it ready when you do your install and programming.

if i'm working on the bike, i bring a fob with me. if i'm working in the garage, and need to move the bike, i just input the pin override code. takes all of 15 seconds. i don't see this as a 'major pain in the ***'.... i think the benefits far outweigh the negatives.... ymmv.

I guess I don't have the problems that others do. I have pockets, so I have my fob on me 99.99% of the time. And even if I do move the bike without the fob around it's never caused a problem. Just flashing lights. Bike starts fine once I grab the fob. Great security system IMHO.

another endorsement for the Radio Shack Piezo siren. Works great and for $6 you can't go wrong.

It's much better with a siren hooked up in stead of just flashing lights.
