Angry New Noise

First time poster. I'll apologize now for the long post. I have a 2003 Ultra Classic with 24,000 miles that I bought in Dec 2011. The bike is in awesome shape, and has been perfect until this past Sunday. My wife and I started on our normal weekend ride (she has an 08 Road King) and as I shifted into 4th gear I heard a new noise, like a marble bouncing around in the transmission. The bike is still cold at this point, and the noise doesn't change once it warms up. I did all of the normal things while I was riding my now abbreviated ride, pulled the clutch, the noise would go away as the bike slowed down, but it went away gradually. 4th and 5th are where the noise is most prominent, anywhere above 40 mph. I tried coasting and pulling the RPMs back up, did not affect the noise, so I kinda ruled out the motor. I checked the primary and tranny oil, as well as stuck a magnet in looking for unwanted shiny things, nothing. I checked all of the bolt, nuts, clamps etc. I could get my hands on and all are tight. I took everything out of the bags and trunk and rode it tonight, still had the noise.
I am open to any and all ideas before I take it to the dealer and tell him, "I've got this rattle..." I didn't notice any extra vibration or rideabilty issues that coincided with the noise either.
Thanks to everyone for any help.

Why are you convinced it's coming from the tranny? With the warmer weather many of us have been experiencing pinging (detonation) where we never noticed it before. Are you certain that's not what you're hearing. It would sound more like BB's bouncing around in a coffee can.

My 01 Deuce had the same kind of marble rattling sound...turned out to be a collapsed compensator spring pack.

You can see the one on the left is collapsed..took me about an hour to swap it out.

Danzio: Detonation crossed my mind, but I can make it ping if I really crank on the throttle, and the sound I'm hearing is... bigger, if that makes sense. There's no rhythm to it, it's like one marble randomly rattled in a can of really light oil. (sounds like I'm buying tuna fish...)

2kids: I might have to check into the compensator spring, could you hear yours in all the gears, or just the higher ones?

Worst noise I ever experienced was when one of the little rubber nubbies got lost from a glove box door. Vibrated VERY noisily at certain RPM's, quieted down when I pulled in the clutch.

Here's hoping it's something as simple!

UPDATE:

After trying everything I could think of, I finally broke down and took it in to the dealer.(enter you own "I've got this noise..." story here).
The bill was $999.55 - New tranny bearings, new shift lever, shift pawl, 5th gear on the mainshaft, and just for fun, new front wheel bearings. Thanks to my trusty extended warranty , I only paid $50.
I think the original noise is gone, but the bike sounds different now, I have to ride it a while to make sure I'm not hearing something else.
Maybe I'll just turn up the radio...
