nah, another option is the american elite in the rear, with the elite 3 in the front. compatible tread, equal load rating. or stock in the front, american elite in the rear. still cheaper than 2 stock tires. unfortunately, stock front tire can only be purchased from the dealer.

Thanks Skratch, I just read up on another thread you were on that mentioned that. I just looked up that tire combo online and can get for 315. I called and left a message for dunlop to confirm as well. Looking to pull the trigger tomorrow if all goes well.
Thanks again.

Good luck Dude! Hope you get long wear on those tires, I am going to stick wirh the stock ones. They wear longer than any other tire out there.

The Avon is known for it's stickiness and has a higher load and speed rating. Also notice Avons center rain groove and 2x the cornering grooves. Same size Bias, same price. Way better for wet running and front braking load IMO.

Just heard from Rob at Dunlop. He said he doesnt see any reason why running an elite 3 up front and an american elite in rear would cause any problems. Only thing is they havent tested that combination.

Now for the good news, Dunlop should be putting out an American elite front tire for street glides come early 2013. I cant wait that long but good news for others out there Im sure.
Thanks again to all who took the time to post and offer suggestions.

I was in the same boat as the OP. I just replaced a d408 and d407 with

Dunlop American Elite in the rear and a Dunlop Elite 3 in front. Its a great combo and handles much better than the 407/408s did. Got them at Jake wilson for 313.00 delivered and mounted/balanced 20.00 wheel (off the bike) at local honda shop.

I switched to Avon Cobras. Awesome wet/dry tire. Dunlop has been garbage on my last 4 new bikes.

Im thinking if I can just drop the tires, bring em to a local shop for mounting and balancing, I should be good to go.

Back in the day it was a breeze to drop the tires, take it to a local indy and have them mount and balance, check bearings and throw her back on.
Guys at dealer were saying its much much more involved on a touring bike.

Also, where to buy these tires online at a good price? Im having no luck at all. Appreciate any feedback.

Thanks in advance.
That's what I thought once and with the help of 2 other people we couldn't do it properly. I swore if I was going to attempt it again I would buy the NoMar tire changer first or let someone else do it....my fracked up back wont let me do it even with a NoMar anymore.......besides unless Im going thru a set of tires every year its not worth the $ offset.
