Hello, my wife and I and another couple or two are riding from the Eastern Shore of MD to Hunter NY next weekend. I am planning the route and I wanted to take us up to the Allentown PA area and head across the Delaware Water Gap and catch I84. I did a search on the roads and I am coming up with sections of 209 being vlosed for reconstruction.
Are any of you from around that area that can verify or dismiss the closures? If there are do you know the details? Can we do parts of the Water Gap with detours?
Some are closed to commercial traffic but cars/bikes can pass, has been a ton of work through PA and this info is a week old as I live 30 minutes from there but havent been out there in a week. As for the 84 thing, stay on 209 through NY as there are some great newly paved roads and the scenery is stunning. Also a slight stop off in Phonecia would top your day off nicely.
We are going to stay in Hunter on Saturday night and I have a loop for sunday Phonecia, Woodstock up to Cooperstown and back down to Hunter, Stay over Sunday and night and head back home Monday.
Two summers ago we took the kids tubing down the river I think it was Tinker Town/Phonecia.
My Godmother owns and operates the Mountain View Lodge in Hunter so going to visit a little and ride a lot...
Just a few days ago I read an article that mentioned a small loop around the Big Indian area partially on Rt 28 as one of the top 10 rides on the east coast. Wish I could find the article again!

I live in the Poconos near Delaware Water Gap and have not had any issues in that area. As another member has posted there is A LOT of construction around that area but you should be fine.

I can't see why you'd want to be on I-84 to go from the Water Gap area up to Hunter.
My suggestions:
- Find your way to the Stroudsburg area (Delaware Water Gap), BE CAREFUL if you take 80 and get off at the E. Stroudsburg exit to 209, construction is going on and it's a mess.
- 209 north to Port Jervis (there is a detour from Dingman's Ferry to Milford, but still ok riding. At Milford turn right and then left at the traffic light to stay on 209)
- stay on 209 north to Kingston.
- At Kingston, take NY State Thuway north to Saugerties (next exit going north)
- At Saugerties, take Rt. 32 north to Rt. 23a.
- 23a up the mountain to Tannersville, then Hunter.
The ride from Woodstock to Cooperstown is a very nice ride. What way do you plan on going?? If you go to cooperstown I would strongly recomend doing the loop around otsego lake, it isent very long but again very nice and relaxing.
I actually live about 20 minutes from Cooperstown.

Thank You;
I was thinking 28 but that is all I know. If you have some better roads to take that would be even better.
This is what I mapped out, I have only been there a few times and spent most of my time around Hunter so the rest of the area is unexplored by me...
