i have a 2005 E-glide standard and it has a blown motor... due to budget I am looking to get a used twin cam from E-bay or Craigslist. as I troll the internet I am finding that there is not too much of a difference in price between the 88 and 96 there are a few things I like better about the 96 and would like to have one... this is where my questions arise... the HD dealers service dept in my area says that my stock header pipes should bolt up to a 96 but didn't sound too convincing of that... Does anyone know if this is true? also what kind of issues would I have with the EFI and computer? would re-mapping work? I already know that a pre 09 motor would bolt up to my frame but just want to make sure I'm not geting in over my head and spending a fortune.... any info or links to articles on this issue would be greatly appreciated...!!!

headers are pretty much interchangable from 1984.5 to 2008.
in your shoes, I'd only buy a used motor from someone I knew.
cost out the factory remanufacturing program, you get a motor good as new with the correct VIN*
a newer motor would open up a can of worms with the efi--- and you might have to swap everything from ecm to fuel pump to ignition coil
seems to me I've heard alot of bad stuff about a motor repair guy in co springs...beware.

* a motor number that doesn't match can get you some time hemming and hawing with a cop at the side of the road--- you would need to carry a certified/notarized bill of sale for the motor with you
I'm curious, what exactly did you destroy on your motor, is it possible to rebuild, or more trouble than it's worth. Also keep checkng e-bay, I have HD motors in my saved searches, the prices vary a lot. Another idea if you want a 96, all around to a few dealers, some have customers who bought a 120R and trying to sell there old motor.

One of the cam bearing needles came out and was jumping around on the crank side... I was running Lucas Oil and I must say it did a great job of masking any problems. No noise, no warnings until it dumped out 2 quarts of oil from the air filter.... so the crank overheated and blued, the bottom of the pistons are pitted, the cylinders are scored, oil pump broke, the seat for one of the cam bearings is wallowed out and would need to be sleeved, the chain tensioners have aluminum imbedded in them, at that point I didnt want to even look at the heads knowing in my heart that they were trashed as well... it basicly needs everything and then some.... as for dealers around denver, none of them hold any used in stock, and didn't have any lists of people with ones to sell. I too have been looking on Ebay and that is what has me considdering a 96, they seem like a better buy, I am not against an 88 but it seems like I could get more for my money with a 96. if I did an 88 I would want to upgrade to the hydrolic chain tensioners because it's my belief that is where my problem started
Yeah, I guess with all of that I would give up on it also. You might want to call around to other dealers besides Denver, the motor will have to be shipped, but same thing for e-bay also. Also since your on the forum, go to the 120R threads, make sure nobody who has bought one isn't selling there old engine, and look in the classifieds on the forums. You may not want to hear this last suggestion, but for a lot of people riding season will be over in the next couple of months, the winter mods will begin and there will be a lot of motors on e-bay, but I know that can seem like forever.
Seeing how you are in Denver have you talked to Scott at Scotts motors??he is a good wrench specializing in big inch motors he might be able to send you to someone who would dump the stock parts fairly cheap and he has all the machine shop stuff to build you a big inch motor as well.Also I would try and talk to the guys at 2wheelers as well.Steve Ruby one of the guys who helps out there at times was a long time wrench at the $hit hole dealer opposite the moon in thornton.Denver is full of twin cam stuff and even has a add for engines on craigslist now for 3 or 4
I have scott's number but have not gotten a quote because he wants to see the motor before he will determine if it's fixable... and I talked to 2 wheelers and couple of smaller shops around and am looking at at least 2500 for a motor around town, ebay is definately cheaper... I have seen them as low as $1200 for an 88 but they are real high milage, like over 80,000 miles... I've been seeing 96's for around 1700 to 2500 with as little as 7000mi I was also told about Klodes and they deal with insurance bikes... What I'm really looking for is someone that knows the troubles I might get into if I attempt a 96 bolt on... will my exhaust work? will my fuel injection work? will the ECM work? the rest is just nuts and bolts.....
locally one is for sale at 2300$ with 30000 miles-------------------Scott can answer the questions about the electronics easier .My quess is you would need to use a stand alone injection like RD racing sells for ease of doing the 2 different injection setups(if memory serves right)
edit----------I thought you were on a older one than a 05--------------------so I have no clue about the injection for sure
