I think I found this link on this forum but this push button insulated cup works well..... keeps drinks colder longer even when using the HD cupholder next to the motor......

We always pack a small cooler for my wifes insulin so we keep a bottle of water in that.

I realize everyone doesn't have to do that so you might want to look at an insulated coffee travel type mug.

Use the Leather saddlebag guard bag w/water bottle holder but replace the HD water bottle with something insulated. For long trips (coast to coast) pounding out 500-700 miles a day - I attach an insulated camelback bladder to the side of my seat bag - the tube goes under my arm and clips to my jacket via a ring to allow the tube to slide. Holds a gallon plus. At gas stops, fill it with ice and water. If not traveling with a seat bag, I can attach it the trunk rack with an extended insulated tube from camelback.

Thanks for the pics and info. Skratch, do you remember where you bought the one you mentioned? I'm leaning towards that or a cofffe type.

I attach one of these to the bar in front of the saddlebag:

I replaced the plastic bottle with one of these:
Amazon Amazon

Drinks stay cool all day and I can reach down with my left hand, grab the bottle, pop the top and take a drink while cruising with my right hand on the throttle. Don't even have to take my eyes off the road.

I got this and i have it on the glove box on the lower left glove box.
http://www.shop.captain-itch.com/Cup...-Glove-Box.htm. It fits great and is out of the way. I use a small thermos bottle, http://shopthermos.com/detail/TMS+HS4080CH that fits in the holder. Its one hand operation, keeps the water cold for over 24 hours even on the bike. works great for me.

I live in the desert, so not only is our riding warmer than most, it is always drier than most- today will be 105º with Humidity about 35%- this is our monsoon season and the wettest time of the year.

1.) cold fluids shrink the capillaries in the stomach and fluids are not ingested as well, so it is possible to drink lots of cold stuff- and be dehydrated

2.) peeing- if you are not peeing, you are dehydrated- stop what you are doing and get fluids

3.) dehydration causes loss of balance and confusion/ poor decision making ( bad on a bike) pedialyte is a perfect solution for low electrolytes ( better than a gatorade type sugary drink)

4.) cover up- moisture is wicked from exposed skin by dry air - the H-D 3 in 1 nylon jacket I got a couple of years ago is the best riding gear I've ever had. the leathers look cool for hanging out, but the 3n1 is perfect, hot/cold, wet/dry.
Some jackets will now take "cold packs" in place of the armour.

cool snake neck wraps are also good for this

if you wear a helmet, get one with vents ( remember the Volvo study showing a drop in reaction tine when the brain temp increases)

5.) I try to drink a litre an hour while riding.

6.) Don't be cheep- buy gas, buy water...a cold bottle of water inside the jacket can be nice for comfort-

what do i do ?

I do freeze about 4 bottles of water before a ride--- I'll wrap a couple to insulate and throw in a saddlebag.

I have saddlebag guard bags that hold a big insulated coffee cup and 2 or 3 waters- that gets me to the first gas stop, where the empty bottles are refilled or replaced- save the sport top that is easy to drink from with out fumbling.

Be smart

if you find yourself making stupid mistakes such as missing turns, forgetting directions etc. you may want to take a break

emergency treatment for dehydration /heat stroke etc. is 911.
get shade, get cool ( cool liquids poured over body), get outer clothing off.

feet above head helps blood flow through brain

like the oil removes heat from the motor internals, blood flow removes heat from inside the brain

I put a Tervis insulated cup in the Cap'n Itch leather cup holder in the right lower fairing. Very well insulated and works the best of all the solutions I have tried so far. 2nd best was the frozen water bottle in the same cup holder. I can get a sip going down the road or at stops. When hot I drink what is in the cup and then refill with fresh cold water, or ?? at each stop.
