I got a 2009 hd rk with 20k miles, I'm still pretty new to Harley and don't know if this is a problem. My bike seems to make a whine that is coming from the primary case side ... I can only hear it on idle and goes with the rpm of the bike... Is my oil to low?
My 11 RK with 14000 miles makes that noise to. Dealer said that's normal, but I have the only Harley out of 7 that dose it. My warranty runs out this Dec so I'm keeping a close eye on it.
alias...
I'd invest in a manual. and to answer the second part of the post...(I doubt it, but)did you check it? Don't be nervous about popping off the side covers to take a look. Gaskets and tools are cheap, and a little knowledge can help.
It's the OEM auto tensioner. I always hated that whine too...I put in Hayden M6 auto tensioner and the noise is gone... http://www.haydensm6.com/m6_bt07.htm

+2 on that.
Hayden M-6 installed on mine since almost new. The bike now has 116,000 miles on it and everything in the primary is still original.

It depends on what's causing the whine. Mine developed a whine at 26K miles. It would quieten when I pulled in the clutch or put it in gear. Turned out the inner primary bearing was bad. The Dealer that repaired it said everything else looked new. Nothing wrong with the stock primary chain adjuster. If you don't have a service manual, buy one or take it to a reputable Dealer and have it checked. Don't believe everything you read on this forum.
