Thinking of changing out windshield on Ultra, stock is a bit too tall so I have to sit like the grinch to see over it. Spoke to a near by dealer and he recommended putting a klock werks on over the Harley brand.... said there was less wind noise.
I also change seats frequently ( Ultra, street glide and solo seats so seated height changes).
I use take off stock windscreens which I have bought from other riders. ( about $35 in perfect shape)
I cut the bottom ( hidden ) edge with a roto zip, some use a jigsaw or coping saw
I do cut the keyholes wider- for easy swaps, loosen screws, pull up, push new one in place, snug screws
the advantages are cost and flexibility.
I also tuck into my fairing in crap weather and can look through the windscreen...you cannot do that with a recurve style.
Mine are slected so that no matter which seat I use, the top edge appears to intersect the road about 40' in front of the bike, so for the most part I am looking over the windscreen.
But the bugs and grit just sail over my head
I use -1.5", -2.5", -3"
The H-D Lexan is very, very tough. resistant to sun, discoloration and I had one take an apple sized rock at 65 mph that would have broken my face...just a scratch.
some of the recurve promise to increase downforce on the front end which would be a good thing- but I dont have any first hand knowledge
When I changed out the shield it was a tough decision on what to go with. Many good choices available. decided to try LRS ultra... http://www.longrideshields.com/ ... After several thousand miles I am satisfied /happy. The buffeting I had with stock is almost non existant and good wind protection, also the windshield looks great, (IMO).
I went with LRS 10", can cruise highway a 70 wearing just my hat, never flys off. Tried Clockworks and about lost my glasses @ 50mph. Best shield I ever used.
Klockwerks, Windsplitter they don't work as well as a nice recurve shield.
Have used both the 7" LRS and Fastaire and they work better than the KW or WS.
LRS is having a sale on a new line called the "Ultra Elite" series. They are made of polycarbonate (Lexan) material. I was about to buy one of their acryilic shields but after seeing some videos posted on HD Forums on how acryilic shields can shatter and crack I changed my mind. Check the link on the new model.
I and most of the people I ride with have Freedom Sheld.
A excelent product, thicker that stock, poished edged, and recurve to push alot of wind out of your way while still having a short shield that you can look over. http://freedomshields.net/Windshields.html
