Default Help! Clutch issues

97 road kink flhr 36k

A week ago I had an issue where the clutch was not fully disengaging.

Had to shift at the right point etc.

Adjusted at the cable constantly to hobble along.

Today, pulled the derby and adjusted the clutch per the serv manual and changed the fluid.

adjusted cable to 1/8 play.

clutch still dragging, and or wont fully engage if i adjust away the drag.

stock bars, cable routed normally.

new cable? or any ideas?

going on our anniversary this weekend, and were taking bike. major bummer.

considering trying to get it to harley, but im broke. and really would hate to have them do something i could do.

Did you pull it apart and check the plates? May need new fibers. If a new cable doesn't do the trick, I'd inspect the plates.

"adjust away the drag"...at the clutch or in the cable...

the clutch has to be adjusted properly ...THEN the cable.

trying to adjust the clutch with the cable adjuster will not work.....!

try a "do over".

make sure the jam nut is snugged

thanks mike.

I adjusted the clutch per the manual at the snug point, backed out 3/4 turn.

I can check again, but I did do the actual adjustment to the clutch.

this all started out of no where a week ago.

Might have to pull your outer primary off to access the clutch pack easier. See if your local indy has a spare steel laying around in the shop. Add that disc to your clutch pack. Inspect the front plate that the jam nut pushes on. look for cracks etc.
If your clutch pack has "AB & C" on it, move it to "C" for the stiffest setting. Put it all back together & start your re adjust again.
With the cable loosened right off at the adjuster near the front cylinder, Turn in your adjuster on the clutch pack until it snugs up. Back it off maybe a half turn & lock the jam nut down without allowing the adjuster to move.
Now adjust your cable until there is only a slight amount of free play on the clutch lever. Jam nut it tight & re test your clutch.
If it fails, buy a new set of clutch disc's & replace your flex plate that you checked for cracks.
Hatch.
