I can get a MU85 B16 delivered to my door for $110. i can pull the rear wheel and get the shop to change the tire an balance for $30. That sure seems a lot better than the prices you guys are getting.
I was thinking of doing just this.. TC; HDWrench.. I'm a pretty good at turning bolts.. Any gotcha's about removing and re-installing the rear wheel on my Ultra???

-NFE

P.S. TC; insert link to DIY forum here..

Just be sure to realign it well when you are done. It's not a big deal to remove it, try backing off on the adjusters evenly when removing it and count the turns to minimize the set up when you reinstall it. Don't mix up the axle spacers, not all bikes have the same size on both sides. When you're done check both the belt tension and wheel alignment

Here's the link to the DIY on the home page https://www.hdforums.com/forumid_241/tt.htm

Thanks for the input guys, it sounds like the MU85 is the widest tire i can get on this bike. I agree the Venom are good tires, I rode a Valkyrie for a while and had Venom R tires on front and back and that big ol beast could corner like no tomorrow. But they are soft and dont last as long. I was also thinking the ME880 but if there is a sidwall problem i am not sure i want to get one on line. Might get one of the old ones.

When I do mine, I'll pull the thing off, take it down there, let him put on the tire and balance. I don't have a machine, and I don't know how else to do it.

'less someone comes on and tells/shows me how!

Well, I have been told by a number of folks that if you run the dunlops and line up the yellow dot with the valve stem you should not have any problems and not need balancing.

With these assumptions: you have cast wheels, and you have no weights on them now. I guess Steel wheels are not as balanced. Also the tire are made to a very tight tolerance, but i guess as with anything you might have a problem.

I am going to change it out my self and see what i will see. the worst thing will be that i have to take it off again and get it balanced. I might make a jig to do this. I have an old bubble balance i could use for the axial balance but would need an spin jig thru the axel bearing to do the dynamic balance.

I am going to try in any event.

CaptnAl,

You taught me something today, thanks. I guess I'll try it myself...now I have a reason to buy that air compressor! (Best part is, savings in labor will pay for it!)

I may do it this weekend, even though i still can eek out another 1k or so. I hate riding on thin skins when it is wet, and up until yesterday we were getting rain every day. the pattern has changed but it will change again soon. Better safe than sorry when it comes to tires.

Ill let you know how it works out if i get to it . Also, any excuss to buy new tools...LOL

Allen,
Do a search for Dunlop Motorcycle tires. At the top of the page that comes up is AMT(American Motorcycle Tires). I just got front and rear WWW MU90/16 tires for my wife's Heritage for 208.00. That is shipped to my front door. I can get them mounted and balanced off the bike for 20.00 each at a local independent. That totals 248.00 for both with me doing the taking off and putting on. That takes about 1 1/2 hours.

As far as alignment on the rear goes, if your bike is a 2005 touring bike it is a no brainer. There is a cam system on the rear axle that automatically insures that the wheel is properly aligned.

Tools you will need are a torque wrench, a 36mm socket for the rear axle nut, a shop manual, and a belt tensioning gauge. These will all cost less that 200.00, and will enable you to always change your own tires.

Sears torque wrench 60.00
36 mm socket 5.00
Manual 50.00
belt tensioning gauge 20.00
10 mm socket 3.00
for front brakes.

This is assuming that you have some basic mechanic tools.

Regards,

Bill
