step 1- disconnect battery.

the starter can be activated by manipulating the mechanisms inside the primary...the chain turns and can pluck off fingers.

I am not sure what dowel spacers you are referring to. There are dowels between the inner primary and the tranny. You need to pull the outer primary to get a small long screw from the end of the starter drive which is inside the primary. Removing the long small screw on the end of the drive frees the starter and allows it to be removed after pulling the 2 3/8 socket head screws holding the starter to the primary. Anyway the starter can be pulled from either a jiffy stand or a lift. its just that when your kness get as old as mine you have some trouble getting down to the work. You can remove the starter, the outer and if you want the clutch and inner primary from the jiffy stand.

Sometimes the starter drive does not engage the ring gear on the clutch hub because you are not getting enough 12V juice through the starter solenoid to spin the starter fast enough to engage the starter drive. You might try removing the starter solenoid cover and pulling the solenoid out of the starter housing before pulling the starter or If you pull the starter you should at least pull the cover and clean the contacts. You basically have a copper washer on a plunger that is sucked down over 2 terminals, 1 from the battery and the other going to the starter. There are rebuild kits for this that replaces the 2 copper terminals and the copper washer plunger assembly.
