In the above previously mentioned article it states that if you wear no helmet, 3/4, 1/2 or full you are still likely to experience hearing loss at speeds over 40 mph. Who rides all day at 40 or even 50 MPH?
check out etymotic ear plugs, their head phone plugs are awesome for the bike and great for airplane rides. Best of all, they are like noise cancelling headphones without the white noise hiss or batteries. http://www.etymotic.com/
you can find them pretty cheap on amazon and they're less than a high powered amp and speakers for your touring bike.. No I don't work for them I just found them and think they're the *****..
Started using ear buds too late. Between wind and exhaust now have tinnitus. Even with a 3/4 helmet and windshield, wind noise especially is a killer. Always wear ear protection if you're going to ride more than a few hours.
I wear a full face helmet so haven't used ear plugs.
Anyone out there with a FF helmet wearing ear plugs? Do you find there's a benefit in doing so?
I want to say thanks to those of you who suggested wearing ear plugs with a FF helmet. I went out and bought some ear plugs, and rode today with ear plugs for the first time, and it was amazing! What a difference. I couldn't believe how quiet my helmet was inside. No wind noise at all. I didn't feel "tired" after a 3 hour highway ride. And I could hear the music just fine in my helmet speakers. This is awesome. Not only did you help make my ride more enjoyable, but I bet you saved me hearing loss problems down the road. Thanks again!
btw, I used Moldex Pura-Fit 6800 soft-foam ear plugs from Amazon:
My hearing has been damaged from over 36 years of loud pipes and wind. i've been wearing custom earplugs for about 6 years. i use these...................
After 54 years of riding I bought my 1st set of earplugs last Thursday. The new mods are really loud. The ear plugs really help. I have about 300 miles on them and so far they are comfy, reduce the wind noise and still let me hear the monsters real well.
One more thing about ear plugs. Maybe I'm just a little flakey but I lose at least two pair of ear plugs a year. They get left at a diner or dropped out of my pocket someplace so I don't spend the money on custom formed plugs because they'd go to that same place where lost sox go.
You cant loose something that's of value to you .
Least not often
You don't loose that smart phone your toting around
That's what that little pocket on your jeans is for .
