works great - I buy the 3% solution at drug store, mix it 50/50 with water. Just don't put it in a clear bottle. There is a reason why it's packaged in brown bottles - light breaks it down.

air is protein would be my first guess. But there are so many products available,I use one called 'bug slide'....that I don't worry about bugs sticking to my bike.

Why not use Sulfuric acid? It's H2SO4 which is just water with this one little sulfur molecule and a couple extra oxygens....
