Picked up a 2003 Ultra with EFI that has me baffled on the fuel consumption.
No wind, no hills, hi-way, running 70 MPH and only getting 34 MPG little luggage and one person, me, on the bike.
On one strech, nearly did not make it to a gas stop and only got 166 miles on 4.85 gallons (5 gallon tank).
I'm used to my EVO Ultra with a carb that can get up to 50 MPG, or up to 250 miles on a tank in a similar situation. EFI is supposed to get better mileage than a carb, but, I'm not seeing this.
Then, all of a sudden on a tank, same day, same trip.... I get 44 MPG with the EFI, under similar riding conditions. I fill up to the brim of the fuel tank neck each time and calc MPG (miles / gallons).
Whats going on here, do I have a faulty EFI sensor or something like that which is causing the EFI to run in "rich" mode most of the time ?
Bike has a Stage 2, 95" big bore kit, Vance & Hines true duals, super sucker air filer.
I would guess that your has been tuned or altered somehow which could be looked at- tuning is sometimes adjusted overly rich esp at high speeds
even so, the efi is not much better than carb for MPG
my evo bagger w. carb was good for 45 MPG at 65 MPH fully loaded with me and camping gear
my 09 FLHTC is good for 43 MPG at 70 ish
Not the gains you might expect from a more complex/accurate system even with the larger displacement should be offset by the 6 speed tranny's longer legs.

With the engine mods that were done you need to look at the tune, it isnt going to be set up like your other bike, sounds like you might find a little in the tune since you picked up the bike this way and you didnt do the mods or have it tuned after yourself.
Cant compare apples to oranges either did your other bike have a stage 2? 95"? etc.. if it isnt exactly the same it wont be the same and even if it is nearly the same set up all bikes are different so you might just need a tune.
Can get around 45 MPG on the Ultra if don't exceed 70 MPH and no heavy throttle through the gears .. That happens about 2% of the time I ride, usually runs high 30's MPG
Hey Mike, not trying to hijack the thread, my 99 is doing about 3,000 rpm at 70 mph, would a 65T pulley work for me, and do you have to replace the drive belt?
