Often times when the crankcase is over-filled, the excess will blow back into the breather, and in extreme cases can even leak out from here.

Check your oil level....where is it on the stick when cold/hot. Many dealers put too much oil in the bike during service...it's common. I believe this could likely be your issue.
I was going to say what he said , only Sharkman beat me to it!

Don't know about the OP but mine is definitely not overfull. Do all my own service. It's not my imagination either. Have smelled it out in the fresh country air with no one around but me. Happens only when downshifting for a curve, using engine braking to slow down. It's more of a hot oil smell than a burnt smell. The 08 Ultra does have a stage 1 breather, I need to check the rocker box to breather seals to see if that could be the culprit. My 08 SG has twice the miles on it and has never had a smell on decelleration.

Had to take care of this yesterday... only 7800 miles and I recently had the dealer replace my brake light switch under warranty, and they missed it. the bolts holding the bracket were only finger tight, and leaking oil onto my cat. Cleaned it after taking the header off, put back together and went for 30 mile test ride - no more burning oil!

FYI the torque value for those bolts was changed to 25 ftlbs.

pain to get at, but I use a 1/4" drive screwdriver bit

insert butt end into the bolt, turn with an open end wrench.

it you do the top bolts first with a torque wrench to about 22 ft lbs, then turn them in with the bit/wrench, you get a "feel" for 25 ft lbs.

My crankcase is not overfull, the bike still burns no oil and I can smell oil at stops sometimes. I always assumed it was from the breathers. If it aint' broke....

I get this smell from the oil vent of my tranny.

I topped the front differential of my truck with the same gear oil I have in the bike. Now I have this "hot engine" smell on the rag I used and you can't miss it

Yep, they do go loose from time to time, but tranny fluid has quite a different smell, and if the service was competent this should have been checked..
Then again, how is one to know this?
Would be a good thing to check..
