Just purchased a heated Mustang Seat. I have noticed that when on for 1 to 1-1/2 hours it shuts off. I can cycle the switches to the off position and then to the on position and it comes back on. I have read that Check Corp. makes seat heaters for motorcycles and their series 2 kit has a automatic shut off feature after a hour of continuous use. Is this what Mustang is using in their seats? Is this what I have or do I have a defective seat? Mustang has no info in regards to this so I sent them a email last night in hopes of a reply today.
Even though I am unfamiliar with heated seats, I'm sure it is very similar to Check Corps seats. Mustang must have something built into there heating element to make it shut off after running for a certain period of time. If it was something faulty in the seat, you would think that the wiring or heating element would get too hot & trip a relay or blow the fuse. If that happened, obviously you wouldn't be able to just shut the switch off & then back on again to get power back to the heated seat. If it was a wiring issue, it certainly wouldnt last an hour before shutting down. I am curious as to what Mustang is going to tell you, keep us posted. Thanks!
I have a Heated Corbin, and it has the feature that shuts it off after an hour. I'm not sure who's heating element they use, but I would think they all use a timed shut-off as a safety feature.
I have the heated Mustang seat, I don't use the heat on the driver’s seat that much but the wife uses her quite often, but she has some back trouble so we have usually stopped to give her a break around 1 1/2 hours and she may have not even noticed that it has shut off. But as others have said, pretty sure it cuts off as a safety feature.
Auto shut off is normal on autos with heated seat, we have two cars that have heated seats. It may be to keep from drying out the materials of the seat and/or protect the heating element.
Mustang did indeed return my email answering my question. They said their seats are thermostatically controlled to maintain a certain temp on both low and high settings. They also said it will shut itself off after 1 hour of continual use. They said simply cycle the switches to reset the thermostat and your good to go for another hour. I would say that if you turned the power to the motorcycle off it would also reset the thermostat as well.
