Default Gps?

Need a little help. Do any of the current GPS units allow you to plan a trip on you laptop using say Google Maps and then load the trip into the GPS from your laptop? Thanks for the help, you guys have always been great!

I never saw a reason to but I looked through the owners manual of my zumo 660 and it seems you should be able to save a route onto a memory card. That should work with any GPS that takes a memory card (I presume).

Garmin Zumo will take routes from several different map programs, but regardless of the nay sayers their MapSource program is great for just that purpose. All you have to do is learn to use it.

Garmin uses a program called "base camp" is a downloadable pc program where you can build your maps and when done you can upload it to the sat nav.

MAny of the GARMIN GPS units will allow you to map out a route and down load it via USB cable to the unit. Harley has a trip planner web site that that works pretty good. http://rideplanner.harley-davidson.c...idePlanner.jsp The Garmin 660 comes with software to allow you to do this also as I think several other models do also.
This is my preferred method of using the GPS....I like to travel those back roads and stay off the interstates. I will plan a route for a 4-5 day trip and never have to look at a map.

I sometimes use the java applet "GMapToGPX" found here:
http://www.elsewhere.org/journal/gmaptogpx/

Decide of a route using Google Map then you call this routine from your FAVORITES menu and the route coordinates appear visible in text mode. Copy, paste in a text editor, save_as '.gpx' then you download to the Garmin.

You will follow the route (line) but will not be informed to change direction.
