Default Clutch primary noise

I just bought this bike, a 2010 flhx. Didn't notice at 1st but it's making an odd sound from the primary. Runs drives shifts normally.

The best I can describe this noise is a whirring sound. Like an open belt drive. It's fairly loud but not bad sounding.

Hold clutch in and put in gear, gone. let clutch out and increase rpms, it comes back. Doesn't really get any louder.

What it really sounds like is a fan running. That air flow sound.

any ideas???

Is the sound more pronounced when standing still or when you are riding down the road?

If the whirring sound goes away when you Hold the clutch in and put it in gear, then let the clutch back out and it comes back, may be the inner primary bearing.
If the noise is there all the time no matter what you do, then my Indy said that's normal. My dealer said that noise is normal even when you can make it stop, but they think every thing is normal. Good luck.

I think I know the sound you're talking about. My 2011 Limited has done it since new and 35,000 miles later it is no different. I could never figure out what it was but I never let it bother me either.

The best way I can described the sound is that it's kinda like a turbocharger spooling up. Is that the sound you're talking about?

just had the same issue. under warranty so took it in. Tech listened, pulled in clutch & sound continued, put in 1st sound gone. If the sound goes away when you pull in clutch it is most likely IPB, if it only goes away in gear, tranny rebuild time. I had a tranny rebuild. the case hardening where the bearings sit on the gear shaft were gone.

Question since some say it's normal/acceptable and others say the IPB is going, what happens when it fails, does the sound get worse, is there an oil leak, what potential damage can occur, how many miles between what some say is normal and replacement? How is that those that say it's normal can continue to ride without issues or are they on borrowed time?

My bike in neutral makes a whirring noise that goes away once in gear, but it might have been there for a long time my Compensator was shot and making a racket before I replaced it no way I could hear it but noticed it almost right away after replacing the Compensator.

I tend to rack up miles and I'm concerned with a failure while on a road trip but I don't have the money to fix something thats normal, any replies are appreciated.

While it could be a bad IPB, it doesn't sound like any bad bearing I've ever heard. It's a very smooth sound. Nothing mechanical sounding too it at all. Totally sounds like a belt spinning around.

I think I'll check the fluid and maybe have my buddy(HD service manager) give it a listen.
