I built ramps out of 2x6's. 10'long. Reinforced with 2x1s. Strapped them together with ratchet straps. Truck in ditch, worked OK for two guys standing to roll 500 lb Vulcan up. I wouldn't want to load a bike that's much heavier that way.
I just bought $99 aluminum ramps, at Tractor Supply, which are much better but I don't think they are strong enough for a heavy motorcycle.

I think trying to do this cheap, may bite you in the butt.

here are the reasons why i'm not using it to go to Colorado.. the trailer empty weighs 1,200+ pounds...add the bike and i'm near a TON...killer on fuel mileage.
As for the whole one-way rental thing... to rent it for a week and bring it abck with me $170...to rent it for 3 days and leave it in Colorado.. $350.. OUCH !
Yea, I know...I used that trailer to haul my bike from Vemont to Florida when I moved. Yes it did burn gas, and I paid the one way rate to leave it in Florida. But, the bike was protected, got there in one piece, and the off-load wasn't this huge slope that I had a problem doing by myself. I thought about loading on my truck. Took one look at the slope I would have to deal with and said forget it! Maybe I'm overly cautious i don't know. But IMHO, $170 plus gas would be cheap compared to the cost if something goes wrong.

Ok, So once you get the bike loaded, what's the travel plans? Do you have your overnight stops planned out? Maybe meet some members along the way?

I have used a 2x12 x 10ft for years to load every bike into 4wd truck.
I started cutting it to fit in back of 8ft box couple years ago so now i own shorter truck and shorter ramp. all my buddies always used wood 2x12 to load in our trucks. We never had trailers.I have never in 20 years seen one break. we never doubled them up or backed them or anything like that.

Make sure you have an iPod or Satellite radio. Once you get past Ft. Riley KS, there's not a damn thing to be found to listen to or see. I just flew out to SLC right before Labor Day to pick up a truck and drove it home. That's a long *** boring drive.

i hear ya man... i posted this thread on another forum too...and i can't ell you how many guy that are saying 2x will mever be enough ... its gonna snap for sure... ??? really? where are you buying your lumber from?
i have thought about backing them up.. a couple 2x4s runs about ten buck..and if you screw them at a right angle to the back of a 2x8 or 2x10 its amazing how much stronger that is... it makes sense..ever seen a 2x on the flat in a house?? probably not....

I knew I had one somewhere.

Gotta love an Avy. We now have 3 of them and only two drivers in the house. The one in my sig is gonna be a garage queen for a while.

There's a couple of Avy forums online also if you ever want to check into them.
