I plan on changing the cam chain to gear drive on my '04 Road King,88ci. I was gonna go with a S&S gear conversion and replace the cams also. I see that S&S has many kits to choose from. What kit and cams would be best to install? Are Andrews cams a good product? Thanks.
I installed a set of S&S 570G's in my 2004 fatboy and haven't had one problem. The piece of mind with the gear drive set up is nice. I'm not sure I understand the advantage of replacing the original set up with the hydraulic tensioner as there is still a shoe to wear out. Perhaps someone can school me on this one.

You get a better oil pump. You dont have to have a crank that is perfect. They are reliable. You have less rotating mass. If not set up/shimmed right gears make noise. A easier job for a DIY person. Hyd set up is cheeper. Nothing wrong with gears. They served a purpose when the spring type tensioners came out but I prefer hyd set up. Do some research and decide for yourself. Tons of info out there.
I think I will go with the hyd.set up with Andrews cams. Whats the typical cost of the conversion with the cams.
Did it myself this past spring. With purchase of bearing removal tools from Heartland, I was in at $900. Took about 5 hours. I'm mechanically inclined and took my time. I understand now that Autozone and maybe another auto parts store may have tools that you can rent to get the old bearings out and new in. Might be worth looking into.
I put S&S gear drive cams in my '04 EG and loved them. I put them in at 19K and it had 77K trouble free miles when I let it go. I don't remember the number but it was the cams designed for touring bikes with mostly two up riding.
The most noticeable difference was in 5th gear when you wanted to pass a car or get on down the road. Really helped a stock 88.
