The service manager said because I have different mufflers on an otherwise stock 12 FLHX, he recomended this download. I have always heard that unless you change the airfilter to add extra air volume that this is not needed. I have the Jackpot 4" mufflers. Is the dealer just looking for some $$ ?
You are right that you don't need the download with just changing mufflers. But if you get the download and an SEAC or other high performance air filter set to go with your free flowing mufflers you will notice a very nice improvement in performance. Worth the money.
If you are not going to do anything else to your bike, other than the mufflers, a download is not needed....BUT....it would probably richen-up the AF ratio and possibly contribute to a cooler running engine...ever so slightly. So it all depends on where you think you will end-up. If you are going to go forward with a new high flow air cleaner, new free-flow header, then I would bypass the dealer $150 upload and add another $150 and get a Power Commander or some other legitimate tuner that you can manipulate to your satisfaction.
You can get plenty of info on that here and plenty of help from those that have gone before you on this route.
The guys are right about not needing the download with just slip ons. Why not just spend a few more bucks and go with the air cleaner and computer? Made a huge difference on my bike.
My other plan is that I know I will be buying a newer Ultra in about 2 years. I can take off my Monster Ovals, air cleaner and computer and the bike is back to stock with no remap needed. Then I put all that stuff on the new bike and get Fuel Moto to reprogram.
