Heres something that looks interesting. Ballistic 16 cell Lithium Ion battery. 500CCA, weighs 3 lbs. They claim to only loose less than 10% of their total charge over 12 months of static use. They run about $280ish. 3 year warranty
regarding the comment about not being able to determine the "born on date" with internet orders, would it make sense to NOT buy early in the riding season as those batteries are probably holdovers from the previous fall? And if that is the case, would the BEST time to buy a battery online be in the early fall? Just thinking...

The logic seems sound PROVIDED you don't mind replacing a good battery at a certain time of year, you don't mind having a new battery "age" on your shelf while you wait for the current one to wear out, or your battery just happens to die at the optimum time for replacement. Most of us have a problem with replacing a battery in the fall "just because" if the present one is still healthy.
A place like Battery Mart or Batteries plus has a pretty good turn and from what i can tell they don't keep tremendous amounts in stock... when i order batteries from there for Patient lifts (60 at a time) they usually say they only have like 10 in stock of that kind so it won't sit on the shelf so i think they have a pretty good turn... Plus a lot of the time i go to Dealers and they have the batteries on battery chargers so they might have been sitting there for a good while also..
Harley gets their batteries made by the lowest bidder and they sell them high... it's all about margins and keeping the owners happy.
I usually just buy a Deka battery. Many retailers give twice the warranty that H-D does... for a cheaper price. Batteries don't last too long in the desert, so I try to minimize cost and maximize warranty.
I have had a ETX30L Big Crank from Battery Mart.com for about 2 years now...I think i paid $89 shipped...I am pretty sure it came in a Deka box. I woud buy it again.
I bought the exact same battery from the same place. They have gone up a little but I can remember how much. have had no issues with the battery.
