Rotor/brake pad life
2 piece rotors usually come in chrome and/or black but that all depends ont eh manufacturer of the rotor. The best rotors I have found here are the Lyndall Carbon Composite lug drive rotors which are full floaters and offer a lifetime warranty. They weigh 1/3rd of the stock rotors each and dissipate the heat much more quickly and effectively than a stock 1 piece rotor or any other 2 piece rotor due to the fact that they are made of a metal matrix composite. I run the Lyndall rotors on my Dyna and the shop VROD. This si 1 finger braking with newer Brembo calipers and the Lyndall gold pads which are required for the first set of pads on their lifetime warranty rotors in order for the warranty to be effective.
I am a front brake guy and rarely use my rear brakes at all on any of my bikes. The front brakes hold the vast majority of your stopping power on any motorcycle however on a bagger which is so much heavier than a softail or Dyna the rear brakes are usually used a bit more. If this principle is news to you do a google search and some reading.
I run the Lyndall pads on all of my bikes (3) and have been for many years and am more than happy with their performance, life span, and stopping power, not to mention the fact the amount of dust that they create is far less than the stock pads which makes for much easier cleaning of your wheels. I am yet to see a set of the new Lyndall rotors warp on any bike.
Read your follow up as well. Thanks for all the great info!!!
(all they do is make you slower anyways). Regarding rotors - I've never had to replace a set, so I can't comment on how long they last. My other high miler was a Dyna (evo era), twin disc front, with about 65k on it.
Not sure chromed stainless is worth it - ever try just polishing the basic stainless rotors? They come up nice and bright and you don't have to worry about chrome flaking off.
