Do a good soap and water wash now. Over the winter spend some time cleaning the bike, one part at a time. You may be amazed at the little things you notice (loose fasteners, maybe a little corrosion etc.).

I always clean the bike real good first, then I use Rustoleum Clearcoat spray on the underside of the frame, giving a heavy coat to areas with chips, etc. Also look inside the fenders, inside the swingarm etc, and give any chips or scratches a quick spray.
In the end, I spray the entire undercarriage, and this acts like a sacrificial / protective coating until next year. Keeps the bike lookin' like new, and keeps any rust at bay.
Truth is: I ride year 'round, even here in Northern Illinois, but to keep the winter street salt at bay, I do the above every November. To each hizzone of course, but to me, stowing the bike away for the "wnter" robs you of 2-3 months of great riding. There are tons of warm weather gear, and as long as the streets are plowed and dry... I say go for it.
For what it's worth: Honestly the only bikes I ever see out in Illinois December / January / February are Harley Davidsons. Either they are great bikes... or we're nuts!
