Those with 09s that are complaining of the abs engaging too soon need to have the new download installed-there is a service bulletin for this.
You won't be complaining anymore.
As for the original problem posted I am inclined to think it's not the abs engaging, but i can't tell from the description.
I had a problem with my 09 Ultra w/abs where the brakes made noise and the pads vibrated against the rotor- and it was felt in the handlebars - but the problem went away when i installed the stock replacement pads from drag specialties.
OP: What are the road surfaces like where you have trouble? ANY reason a wheel under braking changes rotational speed quickly (slows or stops) will activate the ABS. It is your friend in wet, sandy, slippery conditions due to antifreeze or oil on the road but an enemy if you encounter bumps which make the wheel lift off the surface momentarily. While in the air, the wheel will stop or rapidly slow and the brakes will be released before the wheel again touches the road. It may take a second for the braking action to return. If there are several consecutive bumps (washboard surface) you may lose braking for a long distance even though the ABS is working as designed. After the second time I lost brakes during a gentle stop on a summer afternoon on a bumpy surface, I knew ABS was not for me. Until ABS is smart enough to figure out this problem, I refuse to have it. If your problem is on smooth surfaces, you may indeed have a problem that the re-flash could fix.
Not to steal the thread but my ABS on my 2011 SG isn't working correctly for some reason. Took it to the dealer after installing new bars & cables so they could use the digi-tech on it and it kept throwing codes and the front brakes wouldn't pump up. So now Harley has it while I'm waiting for a diagnosis. I know it doesn't have any leaks and all my fittings are good... It should be under warranty... Here's hoping!
