First thing to do.

Ditto... and Ditto.

Facts:

Only 53,000 miles on the clock
Well Maintained
Rattling noises?
Not "as tight" as it used to be.
Did run fine until now.
Has trouble surpassing 80MPH.

A compression test will determine if the rings are sealing, or if the valve train / cam timing is correct. If, as you say, the bike was "Well Maintained", and the mileage is relatively low, the rings being worn might be ruled out. If the valve timing/camshaft timing is correct, then the compression test will confirm either way. "Rattling" noises could be stuck lifters, which would effect timing. Compression test, clean lifters.

Next step would be to confirm spark, but if the bike is running well UP to 80 MPH, this might be ruled out as well. Then again, as long as you have the plugs out to do a compression test, it may be a good time for new ones. Certainly won't hurt.

Next step is fuel. Is the bike getting a sufficient amount of fuel at all throttle positions? Check the TBW operation and function. Check Fuel Filter.

If you have correct compression, spark and fuel - she should run.

Very good advice indeed. At this point we are all miles away and just speculating, which is useless.

I think the compression check is a good idea. Also what about bad gas had you just filled up or topped off the tank?I would do the simple cheap checks first and I like seafoam though some don't.

Just did a rebuild on mine... 72K - It was tired and I had gotten used to the power being sluggish. It rattled like crazy. Compression was low. Everything inside was worn out and loosey goosey.

The rebuild woke her right back up, nice and tight again. Kinda like a young woman... errr at least she doesn't fuss when I ask her for all she's got ;-) I forgot how excited she'd get back in her youth. Sorry I'm getting off topic... Anyways, you get the idea

It doesn't sound like you are mechanically inclined so I would take it into the dealer and have them look at it. When is the last time you had a major service done on the bike?

Always start with the simplest, most obvious stuff first. Air filter, spark plugs, fuel filter, plugged fuel injectors, cracks in the intake.

When its idleing, Take a water spray bottle and spray the intake manifold. If idle changes or chokes then you have a leaky intake.

I agree, could be as simple as needing a thorough service.
