I know there are several threads on Bluetooth intercom systems but I'm having trouble finding an answer to my question.
My wife and I both wear half helmets. We use earplugs for protection against wind noise.
We would like to purchase a Bluetooth intercom system. I notice that several manufacturers sell setups specifically for use with half helmets (looking hard at the Sena SPH10H). But here's my question:
Will the headsets provide protection from wind noise since we would no longer be wearing ear plugs? Or would we continue to wear ear plugs with the headset?
If you think it's a dumb question, skip it. But those of you with experience using half helmet with a headset, please share your experience. I don't want to drop that much coin just to find out it doesn't do what we want it to do.
I don't know how the Sena system works... I imagine speakers over (covering) the ears? If so, I would continue to use the earplugs for noise protection. Most bluetooth intercom systems can go pretty loud, so hearing each other shouldn't be a problem even with the earplugs.
I use a Scorpion EXO100 half helmet, it has a detachable "collar" with ear flaps/pockets. The ear flaps fit snug and really help cut the wind noise - and they accommodate the Scala Rider speakers perfectly.
I use to wear ear phones (which also served as ear plugs) to listen to music, but since I got the EXO100 I now just use the speakers of the G4 to listen to music, and talk to my wife (she rides her own bike), and the wind noise is not an issue. I really like the Scorpion helmet, very comfortable.
Yes on the ear plugs. The speaker "pouches" don't cover your ear tight enough to offer much, if any, protection. If you use the foam ear plugs, you should be still be able to hear the intercom. I use the SMH10, not the SPH10, and the volume of the unit is really good. I would assume the it would be the same with the SPH10. BTW, I love the Sena systems. You won't be dissappointed.
