As a potential new HD owner, I wanted to turn to the experts on the forums for some advice. I want to know which of the following folks think is a better buy for my next bike. This is my first HD, but I have been riding metric bikes for 20 years and am making the jump for a variety of reasons.
Most of my riding is just myself for fun and some commuting to work. Some of the riding is with my wife - usually not more than a weekend trip away, and mostly just day trips.
The 2 options are:
2007 Road King - 96", Pearl white, many custom parts (both look and performance) mostly blacked out, super clean with 10K miles. Only things I would need to do is change out the bars (it has beach bars and I can't stand them - too wide and uncomfortable), and purchase a tach, sissy bar and windshield.
2009 Road King Police Special (bought by a retired P.O., not an actual service bike). 103" ABS, black, has one up air ride seat and is all stock otherwise (including tach). The paint is a touch rough in a couple of places and has 22K miles but it is pretty clean as well. Would need to change out seat and buy sissy bar. Also - rear tire is about 50%.
Assume both bikes are the same price - which would you purchase.
Get the 09 and make it the way you want as far as custom parts. Don't get caught up in the aftermarket parts the 07 has. Half the fun of owning the bike is selecting exactly the looks and performance parts you want. Besides, since your first HD will be a big tourer I would strongly suggest the ABS.
My vote would also be the 09. For one, the tire at 50% is as good as a new tire on the 07. That bigger tire will go nearly twice as far! If both are the same price the 07 is either overpriced or the 09 is an awesome deal! The 09 will always be worth more just becuase of the new chassis.
That all said, the 07 is also a great bike and you really can't pick the WRONG bike!
Let us know which way you go, and welcome to the forum!
OK - so here's the update - after a bit more discussion, the cost of the white one just makes more sense - even though it's older.
Looks like there is about a $3500 difference plus shipping/travel.
At the end of the process, I save a bit of money after doing the bars, and I really like the white bike better.
And - the 09 tire would need to be replaced soon and I'd still need to get a seat and sisy bar for the wife. Plus exhaust
Thanks for the quick replies - clearly the next one will be the newer frame/motor... Just like me to always think about the next one so fast!
