My experience and research on Harley's B model auto one. To me it was interesting how it works and the finial adjustment differed from the manual adjuster. I found with my installation with the new adjuster complete closed and setting on the bottom of the inner primary cover I had just slightly less play in chain than initial setting calls for. Once the ties were cut and the primary chain rotated it did it's adjustment (heard couple clicks)leaving the chain at a tight 1/2" play. Noticeable tighter then I had been running manual and how the dealer had adjusted it under warrant service. Got it all bolted up and it was so quite at idle and thru gears it was like a different bike. Problem was I kept imagining I heard a whine. Since mine has the adjust cover I pulled it and checked adjustment and it felt like a tight 3/8. I panicked and pulled the outer cover off. It was really still at the tight 1/2". Seems that you can get a totally different fill with cover off and with it on pushing up in there with a couple fingers. By then I was so pissed off from pulling the cover I put the old adjuster in there and set it one notch tighter. Fills and measures a little tight to the book tolerance but still slight looser then the auto one. Bike is like night and day difference. For the last two years at idle it sounded like a rotary tiller in a gravel bead. What was annoying to me was it on and off type of noise. Now it it quite at idle and smooth thru the gears. I really believe set correctly the manual one is fine and the adjust time call out is way over stated. This shoe on mine had little wear at 30K.

You do need to be sure you have the B version and not the A version. See other thread I have listed for info.
In my list of jobs I once worked in heat treating and we toughened delrin by slow heating in hot oil. (we used in in masts for sliding bearings) It darken the material. Delrin, plastic, nylon (softer then the first two do not absorb oil)

Appears Hayden unlike Harley's adjuster is just a heavy spring loaded tensioner that stays tight all the time under spring pressure. Harley's has two heavy springs that take the chain down to what appears to be 3/8 play but if you push hard you will see it really is 1/2". The other long skinny spring is just the loader if wear gets over 1/2-5/8 slop it will jump one notch.

The problem with the stock tensioner is that it has absolutely NO give action at all. It just gets tighter and tighter. Upon installation, the Hayden is as tight as it is going to get. And it has the give of the spring action to dampen damaging chain tension and avoid potentially threatening component problems down the road. Not trying to be a Hayden salesman here, just relaying the concept. Maybe you should consider a Baker for your application.

I think I'm going to try to modify the stock one so it wont rachet up so tight.

I got my bike all back together tonight so I took her on a cold 38 degree Michigan December ride, only got 15 miles on her.
I really cant give any good info on the Hayden until spring gets here so I can get some real miles on before I make a real report. As for tonight, I didn't feel much improvement if any. When I got back home and let it set and idle it still made that whining noise.
I don't think my IPB is bad because the noise is always there no matter if the clutch is in or out or in gear or neutral.
I will give a complete up=date this Spring............Winter Sucks.

I forgot to mention the stock shoe had deep cuts in the front part and they was a bit uneven with 17000 miles on it. I didn't like the looks of it.

Not surprising considering how mine was worn at just 13,000 miles. Get ready for someone to blame it on the primary oil you use

A chain running across the foot will make a whining noise. You have 2 springs pushing up on the chain which is loading the bearings and chain but not as bad as the stock unit. I thought i would like to try a hayden unit but now that i think about it i will just keep the adjuster i have in the bike now will stay and it is not the harley one.

I went back and looked at the pics of your stock shoe, mine only has 4000 miles more and my stock shoe looks much worse. I wish I could put up pics but I need to have my Son come over and he even struggles with it.

Someone wrote the words 'Rocket Science' on the Forum one day ...

Combining chemicals, temperature and polymers its like crossing a street: you have to be conscious of what you're doing.

In the end, the worst that can happen is a jammed transmission. It happened to me while accelerating out of a long curve (BMW R50S) and I don't want to experience this again.

Pictures are not difficult, you can do it. I use a Picasa web album. It's free from Google. All you need to do is get a free google user and password. That gives you another email address (don't you need another one? ) You also get lots of other applications you can explore, but under Photos you can set-up your Picasa web album. The space is free and I think they give you up to 1 gigabyte. So I have several different "albums" there, each containing photos of various projects, things, etc.

To post a photo, simply right click on the photo, then left click on "copy image location". That places it on the windows "clipboard". You then can insert that into any post you make on this formum by using the icon available in advanced mode that looks like a yellow square with a little mountain in it named "Insert Image". When you click on that icon, you will get a hyperlink box. Simply place your cursor there over the http: and right click, then left click on Paste. That will past the link to the picture you just copied and when you do a preview of your message, you should see the picture.

You can post on this forum ANY picture you see on the internet. It can be anywhere. Just copy it's location and use the "insert image" icon in advanced mode to insert it's location hyperlink. Example: Michael Jackson

OK, maybe I should have used a different example.
