I have to agree with the post above. I've tried ski gloves, Red Wing thinsulate gauntlets, Red wings with silk liners, but, my quality of life improved greatly when I got some heated gloves. I would get 22 miles into my commute and start sticking one hand at a time between the jugs to warm them up. I now have a heated jacket liner, and gloves and fear no temperature extremes.
It took me a long time to find a pair of non heated gloves that really work in cold weather and where you won't loose dexterity. No additional liners are needed. These work so well, when the temps reach 50 and above, I have to remove them because they are now too hot! http://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/held-freezer-glove
Heated grips heat the palm of the hand as well as the leather of the glove. As the gloves heat, the heat radiates all the way around the hand. The palm will be hotter than the back of the hand, but there will be enough heat on the back that you will not be uncomfortable.
Never much believed in heated grips until I got the Limited. Now I wouldn't be without them. We ride in 30* temps most of the winter here.
Bite the bullet and buy heated wear. I run the Gerbings jacket liner, G3 gloves and the Harley dual controller. They take the cold out of cold weather riding and make all the in between riding SUPER COMFORTABLE. They are a bit pricey but once you run with them you'll kick yourself in the *** for not having done it sooner.
You'd be surprised at how much of the "in between" temps that you ride in that you will end up turning the heat on for once you have the gear. I know that you weren't looking to go heated but IMHO it is the final say in cold weather comfort!

It gets in the teens here on occasion. I have heated grips. The key is lined thick leather gloves. They have to stop the wind in top. Then the grips heat the liner from the inside.
You gonna wear thick heated gloves on a cool day? Get them with a thermostat.
I went without coffee one morning when it was 15 degrees and my fingers didn't numb up. Now, if I ride and I know its going to be cold I wait to have my coffee. It works.
