Caffeine and Sugar thins the blood so you will feel colder if you put any of that in you before venturing out into the cold. And hot chocolate is the worst thing you can drink before going outside in cold weather.

I used a set of the battery operated gloves this year and they are great...A little on the bulky side, but they worked well.

Heated gloves are the only way to go to keep hands warm when really cold. It is a pain to plug them in, but they are nice on a long cold ride. I do not use the thermostat, just turn them on and off with the switch.

I bought a pair of snowboarding gloves for those really cold mornings and they work great. It takes a little getting used to the thickness though.

My motor unit runs year 'round here in the northeast, which means we ride in single digit temps at times. The least expensive and most practical solution is heated grips combnined with a set of Hippohands. Heated grips, by themselves, do not provide enough warmth in sub freezing temps. They work best with the Hippohands, and you can get by with a lighter set of gloves than you would otherwise. They also shield your hands from rain.

A set of Heat Deamons and a set of Hippo Hands is unbeatable. The Hippohands cost less than $100 shipped and will last for years. Check 'em out at www.hippohands.com

I use the combo on both my police bike as well as my '12 RGU. You will find the heated grips come in handy in the fall and spring as well.

I use heated grips and when it gets real cold then I move up to my winter unheated gloves. With the heated grips I still wear my summer gloves while my brother on his '09 without heated grips has already moved to his winter gloves.

You'd be surprised at how much of the "in between" temps that you ride in that you will end up turning the heat on for once you have the gear. I know that you weren't looking to go heated but IMHO it is the final say in cold weather comfort!
Took me 30 years to get heated gear wish I did it sooner, my new ride as heated grips but heated gear is the way to go if you truly want to stay nice and warm.

I know a guy with a SG who refused heated gear because it just didn't seem right on a motorcyle. Then his wife got him a heated seat and gloves for Christmas and he won't ride without them now. I kind of understand, heated car seats were no big deal until my wifes new car had them. They sure are nice.

Get yourself some Gerbing's heated gear and you'll never look back. It keeps the bulk to a minimum and you can ride in the 30's and be nice and warm.
