Don't believe everything you read. I was having the same problem when I wanted to change my saddle bad guards and take the guard rails off. Book didn't list any of the guards for my year except for in the gloss black. A pretty good guy at the local dealer took the time to research a few things and found out that some part #s had changed and in fact the ones in the book, even though not listed for my year, were the ones I needed.
It is kind of like asking the difference between a Ford Focus and a Ford Fiesta. Both have four wheels but are different.
They are both Harley Saddlebags. But they use different parts and are different sizes. The '04 are larger with different mounts. Different lids and the earlier lids are detachable.
The right '02 has a cut out for the battery.
This is way wrong .... The battery "cut out" was done away with in 1993 with the chassis change ... way wrong! The removable bag lids were last used in 1992 along with the l/s bag having the "cutout" for the battery. 1993 and later used bags that were the same size on each side and had the "new and improved" bags that opened to the outside of the scooter with "hinges" mounted on the outside of the bag.
