This is a known problem with these bikes. I rented two this summer and BOTH had warped rotors. When I would apply the front brake the whole front end shook like a mother****!
When I returned the rental dept said this is happening on almost all of their bikes. The one I rented had 6k mi on it.
I agree, they should replace under warranty. Its not our fault they are using sh*t materials to cut corners. When will they learn???
If I was out of warranty, I would be looking at something aftermarket made in USA with USA steel. Its just going to happen over and over until HD wises up!
I didn`t know there was US steel anymore, since all of our steel plants closed more than 30 years ago.
Got mine on my '11 RK replaced under warranty. No questions asked. Just let go of your front brake while sitting still. The hot brake pads cause spots where the rotors get warped when you don't let off the brake.
Most dealers will check if they are within spec. If they are out of spec, they will replace under warranty. If they are not out of spec, they will charge you a labor charge. Mine were barely within spec, I got charged, and still my brakes pulsate.
yeah, same bike...had about 15000 on it and had them check it when they did the service, they measured the tolerance and found they were out of spec and they replaced them for free.....
disks can be warped by holding hot pads against the disks while stopped.
it is good to get in the habit of releasing the brakes when you can, either in turn ( front/back), or allowing the bike to roll slightly between applications.
I've heard this more than once and I don't buy it.
I put 30k on my Dyna before moving to the Street Glide and not once did it ever give me braking issues. I ALWAYS hold the front brake at a stop and I rode that bike way harder than this one and the brakes were in great shape when I sold it. I bought the Street Glide with 9k and the rotors were so bad it would lock up the front wheel at low speeds if I wasn't careful. I replaced the originals with a set of take-offs and they lasted 7k (knew batter than to buy used but the tight *** in me won out). As you can see in the picture, they were warped and not in need of a cleaning.
2006 Rk Classic had her front rotors swapped out under warranty just around 5k. Pulsing during braking was the symptom. 20k later and I haven't had a problem.
Hi I have 2012 Road King Classic with two warped rotors. Here in the UK HD will not replace under warranty as classed as wear and tear. Yet I have only 4500 miles.
Do dealers in the US still replace under warranty please?
My bill here for the replacement is over $1000. Not a happy HD owner at the moment
I was wondering if this was a problem. New Ultra Limited in July. Took the bike back in August for the 5k service. I told them the fronts were warped. They said one was warped, but replaced both under warranty. Now I am about to take it for the 20K, front and rear are warped.
Hi there
I'm in the UK and the dealer replaced my front rotors under warranty almost 2yrs old with 1800 ish miles on it. They didn't want to but I argued my case having had car discs replaced and on a Triumph Tiger. I argued it is a safety issue as it can cause early activation of the ABS reducing stopping ability and that the Discs are designed to last at least the life on a set of brake pads.
You need to kick up a fuss and threaten them with Trading standards and if they can't help take it to the press and small claims court for Ł50. Will cost them way more than the cost of the discs to defend that! Ask the service manager if it happened to his vehicle would he just shrug his shoulders and pay up ! I don't think so !
