Default cam chain article

This is a article from JP Cycles on cam chains that may be of interest to those who have not known of this issue before. Most of us already are aware of this problem but for those who do not, it is good information to have.

This is fairly common knowledge if you regularly read the posts on this forum. I have an '06 with 35K and just had mine checked at the dealer. It was like new. I will have it checked again at around 50K.
I am pretty easy on my motor, gentle starts (no rapid acceleration) and rarely exceed 4,000rpms and most of my riding is between 2 and 3,000 rpms.

For 06 and earlier there, there is a upgrade kit includes different cams shoes, oil pump, and i think a cam plate from HD, or go gear drive cams and reduce the drag that the chain and shoes create.

FYI, the parasitic "drag" from the cam chains is just about the same as the parasitic drag from gears; it takes HP to turn both. The only advantage converting to gears rather than the later hydraulic tensioner/roller chain setup would be for more precise cam timing at high rpms. That might get you another 2-3HP somewhere north of 5000 rpms; not really an advantage for a street bike.

Its just a way to get more people to buy their kit, not required on 07-up and the HD kit works just fine for the years affected.

I'll never have to worry about chains and shoes again.

I read the article and all the comments and still have no clue on what mileage to expect form the 07 and newer tensioners. I have heard a few casual comments about the new motors going 100k before needing new tensioners but have heard nothing from those who have gotten inside the cam chest before that to check. Anyone have any first hand experience with the hydraulic style units in the 96 ci engines? My 08 just turned 49,000 miles but I'm not looking for any winter projects unless experience suggests now is the time to get in there.
