Default Stupid Question???

Hey guys, here is your laugh for the day.

When installing new cams, do the 2 dots on the cams have to line up, at the same time that the marks on the gears line up?

The reason I ask is, I put my new cams in the plate with the dots aligned. but when I went to put the gears/chain on the exterior of the plate I had to move the motor around a smidge and now the exterior gear marks line up, but the dots on the cams are out.

ALL THE DOTS NEED TO LINE UP AT THE SAME TIME, RIGHT?

I know this is beginer stuff, but I cant seem to find the answer on the forum here, or any of the videos that I've watched. Please help (and laugh if you have to)

Thanks.

I think you guys misunderstood the question. Thanks for the pictures. I know that the Cam dots have to line up. When you put the exterior chain and sprockets on (rear cam to crank), do those marks have to line up at the same time that the dots on the cams line up?

The pic shows the "internal chain". Those marks were lined up......until, I put the "rear cam - crank sprokets and chain on. When the "exterior "crank-rear cam" marks line up......the dots on the cams themselves do not.

What I am asking, is do "both" sets of marks (dots on cams, and marks on crank-rear cam) have to be aligned at the same time?

I'm sorry if I am pissing some of you off, but I can find no referance to all four marks in Either the shop manual or the internet. I can , how ever find endless articles on the alignment of the 2 dots on the cams.

Once again, thanks

Its a good question, when I rode a VStar the same problem confounded me when checking the valves, one mark would line up and the other was way off. I figured It was a jap bike thing and never did get an answer that helped, I hope you do.

I'll answer the question for you since everyone wants to be around the bush. The answer is YES THEY DO. The sprockets have a certain way that they go on the engine. The top big sprocket has what looks like a missing tooth. The bottom smaller sprocket has a "flat" that it has to line up on. They only go on one way and the dots have to line up like the ones on the cam ALL AT THE SAME TIME. Once you line them all up, you can turn it all you want. If you need anymore info, PM me and I will be glad to help you out and not beat around the bush. Its obvious some folks have never done this before but want to give out info on how to do it? Wierd...

HeavyD...

You didn't say what year bike you have, but...
I have an older RK, the rear cam sprocket is keyed and only fits on one way, once that is installed you only need to align the crank sprocket with the large outer sprocket on the rear cam.

From what Eshaw responded about the 'The top big sprocket...has a missing tooth...' tells me that the rear cam sprocket on later models are also 'keyed' so that it only fits on in one position. You now only need pay attention to the crank and rear cam sprocket marks. I'm sure somebody will let us both know if any assumption I've made about newer models is incorrect...

I used to believe there was no such thing as a 'stupid question'. Then the internet came alive, and I have since changed my mind about that...
This question still does not fit my new thoughts of what a stupid question is.

Great pics here of what it should look like. Scroll to the bottom for pics of the installation. http://www.fuelmotousa.com/site/performance-cams.html
