I run Amsoil 75w140 in the trans hot and cold as well. Much quieter and shifts nice. I have run the Amsoil in the last 3 bikes for a total of about 100k miles and have never had a trans issue.

Now that i think of it...I now have formula + in my tranny and Primary ...I have been wanting to try Shockproof but just never got around to doing so...I have 74000 miles and at around 40-50k my IP bearing started leaking...they fived it under warranty and refilled it with Formula + and i changed it again to that...

Been running amsoil 75-110 in my 99 and 09 and have yet to have any problems
The transmission is the onlypart on my 99 to yet have any issues

I have read this before and it was explained that the reason was because they were using paper type gaskets and this would allow slight wicking through the seams. Didn't hurt the machine but made a mess. That they changed gasket material around 2003-2004.

Also transmission/gear oil and engine oil grades are not the same.

Every once in a while I'll get a whiff of that smelly crap in there but man she shifts like a dream now and very noticeable difference in the infamous "klunk" of the HDs.

+1
I'm running the Redline oil in all 3 boxes and couldn't be happier. I haven't noticed the bad smell though. Shift quality and clutch engagement are greatly improved.
