Default Transmission oil weight differences?

Ok, sorry if this is "another oil post". I tried to search for an answer and got this message:

"Your submission could not be processed because a security token was invalid.

This error most often occurs for one of two reasons. Trying to upload a file, or photo which is too large, and it took too long. Otherwise it can occur if you have been on the page a long time, before submitting your post or pressing the upload button.

So no search is possible.

I've been following the gear lube/engine oil threads so I knew that I didn't want to use the same 20w50 that I use in the engine. When I ordered my oil, I got a case of oil and 2 bottles of gear lube. I thought I'd ordered 75w90. But I messed up and ordered 75w110. Called the dealer and he said that it would be fine. I've got 400 or so miles on that oil change now, and all seems to be fine. But in one of the other posts, I saw that some guys were running 75w140.

I admit that I'm not really a wrench, but considering that the moco suggests 20w50, the 75w140 seems way too heavy. What say you all? Am I ok with 75w110? Is there any reason to use the 75w140?

Thanks

David

The ratings are different for gear oils versus motor oils.
The reason to use 75w140 would be for a higher temp.
Since you are in TX, I could see it being popular.

i drank the koolaid too.. I'm sure somewhere down the line I'll be thanking myself for doing it and others like Notgrownup for all their good advice. I'm not running the syn3 stuff in my transmission anymore either based on things I've read (good, bad, indifferent). I switched out to Redline Heavy Shockproof and couldn't be happier. Every once in a while I'll get a whiff of that smelly crap in there but man she shifts like a dream now and very noticeable difference in the infamous "klunk" of the HDs.

David I am in Ft. Worth and I use the Mobil 1 synthetic 75w140. Once spring rolls around in a couple of months you'll be set. It really isn't as thick as you think, not like syrup. I have Mobil 1 synthetic 20w50 in the engine and primary.

For those that believe every thing HD says, up until 2002 Harley FORBID you to use synthetic. Then along came Syn3 and it is ok. Marketing to sheeple.
