Default Oil Filter Question

I'm sure this has been beat-to-death. I did a search, but a ton of stuff cam up when I searched oil filters.

I am doing my first oil change. Not actually my FIRST oil change, but the first one on a Harley.

I have a few questions...

It's an 04 Electra Glide with 5k on it. It has a stage one kit - I don't think that matters much, though.

Everything that I have read says use only Harley oil filter, because of the bypass valve. Has anyone been using aftermarket filter. If so, what brand?

The book says check the oil on the side-stand, but it doesn't specify if the dipstick should be pressed in all the way, or check it while it's resting on the fill.

The wife and I rode to Laughlin yesterday, pocketed $250 of the casino's money, and rode back today..
570 miles in total

K&N here as well. But I may look into one of those cartridge types in the near future.

Thanks for the replies. The wife just reminded me that I bought a filter for the bike a while ago. Now that I found it, it's a K&N 171c.

How about the dipstick. Do you generally plug it all the way back in or let it rest while checking the oil?

Not trying to steal this thread, but, what is used to clean the canister type filter at home, Kevin?

I run a couple of the K&P filters. You can either spray down with brake cleaner or just clean them in the sink with dish soap and water, dry them and reinstall.
