I agree with you, in gearboxes there is very little chance of polluting oil with chemical contaminants and hydrocarbon residues; I was only pointing towards solid particulate matter that can be trapped within the filtration media or recirculated when the by-pass is open.
IMO the worst type of contamination for an engine is of colloidal nature (liquid phase) and our oil 'N'-micron filters can't block that!
Concerning the traditional "3,000" miles drain interval, on my common rail diesel engine I went to 35,000 KM with Rotella 5W40 semi-synthetic. The oil stunk diesel fuel, looked like squid ink and the engine worked perfectly. I often read that oil blenders made QA tests showing we can extend intervals up to 60,000 KM with modern oils. Who should we believe?
The 5 micron figure given by Harley is utter rubbish of course but people will believe anything they are told by the beloved MOCO.
...and when your oil is cold and thick, it is not filtered, it shoots through the bypass to ensure your engine gets enough lubrication...same when your filter gets dirty...when the pressure differentials reach the design threshold pressure...guess what? the oil does not get filtered and it returned to the engine via the bypass. That's why a properly designed bypass structure is so important.
Wonder if a cheap lawnmower filter has a properly designed bypass that will open at the proper pressure threshold differential to protect your HD engine?
I use mostly Amsoil, it's a little smaller in diameter than the HD and I believe it is truly 5 micron. The slightly smaller diameter makes it a little easier to hand tighten on installation, at least for me with xlarge hands. Even the most expensive filters are relatively inexpensive in the grand scheme of things, so I don't get those that use bargain filters, which have poor filter media and you never know whether the bypass is functioning the way it needs to. Oil temps in HD twins can often exceed even the upper end of high performance car engines, which, in my view can reek havoc on the substandard filtering media of cheap bargain filters over time. Now I know many have used them long term with no apparent ill effects. Russian roulette IMHO. Don't know much about the canister types, but I am not sure I like the idea of all the extra work with them, cleaning etc. I like spinning the old one off, chucking it with all its dirt, and spinning on a new, clean, filter. Too easy.

I work in a research lab and was involved in producing sub-micron filtration systems for various fluids over the past 25 years. We simply followed the evolution of filtration techniques used in silicon wafer production (etching of computer chips). This is why I can bring a clarification about types of filtration and misleading commercial practice based on lack of public information.
I also changed fluids too often in the past
