Stick with the HD filter after markets are cheap for a reason.

I have never heard of a reusable / washable OIL filter,,, even from K&N,, which I am not a fan of.

I use the HD filters for all my oil changes, just seems the safest and most logical.

Reusable oil filters are quite common and have been around for years in the aviation industry. Within the last few years many manufacturers have started making them for various auto and motorcycle applications. The advantages are that you can SEE if there are any contaminants in your filter media and it is more environmentally friendly not to mention cheaper in the long run to use them.

Been running these on all 3 of my bikes for years now. 06XL, 08FXSTC, and 08 Ultra. Love em!!

Just make sure you fill the engine with 'particle free oil' and you'll be OK with the filter of your choice.

How often do people change filters on automatic transmissions? Every 10 years?
Tilt, not a valid comparison, if that was the intent. The transmission does not get contaminated by blow by containing raw fuel, water, combustion by-products containing compounds which will form acids with the water from combustion. The transmission oil also doesn't cool the bottom of the pistons which are much hotter than the internals of the transmission. Whether auto or manual, there is a vast difference between the environment in a transmission and that in an engine. The relatively rapid rate of contamination of engine oil necessitates much more frequent oil and filter changes for an engine to remain "healthy" for the long run.

Default HD filter

Who do you think makes the HD filter.
Definitely not Harley.
Wix is a 5 micron filter and meets all HD specs.
It is also covered by Wix should a warranty situation occur.

I am using an Amsoil filter at the moment and have seen more consistent oil pressure than with the HD filter, I am seriously considering a re-usable filter on the next change though, need to decide which one though as there are a few different ones.

Been using K&N for the past 10 years without issue, plus I like the 17mm nut which makes removal a snap.

I agree with you, in gearboxes there is very little chance of polluting oil with chemical contaminants and hydrocarbon residues; I was only pointing towards solid particulate matter that can be trapped within the filtration media or recirculated when the by-pass is open.
IMO the worst type of contamination for an engine is of colloidal nature (liquid phase) and our oil 'N'-micron filters can't block that!

Concerning the traditional "3,000" miles drain interval, on my common rail diesel engine I went to 35,000 KM with Rotella 5W40 semi-synthetic. The oil stunk diesel fuel, looked like squid ink and the engine worked perfectly. I often read that oil blenders made QA tests showing we can extend intervals up to 60,000 KM with modern oils. Who should we believe?
