I did the grips on the Road King with ISOs and didn't use the cardboard trick and didn't worry about cruise (I've done several that way). I did squeeze the lever while putting everything back together to get it to line up. The brass bushings will try to escape on you! I adjust the throtle cables until I felt they are about even andmost of the play is out. It's the passenger side that can be a problem if you don't line up the grip exactly where you want it first. When you put the glue on it you have to slide it on in the position that you want since you have about 3 seconds before it sets up. I missed slightly on mine and it needed about an eighth of a turn more to line up where I want to grip it.
Good Luck!

DONT LOOSE THE BRASS FERRULES!!
What he and others have said. Let me tell you about them:

1. When you remove the 4 small screws from the right hand controls and start to separate them, you will notice a small space where you can look inside the controls. This opening is just enough to where if one of the ferrules is dropped and does not hit the floor, it can drop inside the controls, be unseen and you won't figure out where it went until you put controls back together again and the right turn signal switch won't mash in. Wanna know how I know? Found out hard way.

2. If dropped and they don't drop in this small space and go inside controls, they can bounce in any direction up to 10 ft. away. Wanna know how I know? I tested this after I had bought a couple of replacements for the one I dropped inside the controls and didn't know about(see #1 above).

3. These damn little brass ferrules are gold colored and they should be as they seem to be made out of gold and will cost you $2.75 each if you have to replace them. Wanna know how I know? See #1 above again.

4. Oh, depending on what kind of grips you got, I would suggest doing the right/throttle side first. That way when doing left/clutch side, you can make everything look alike. Nothing like having 1 grip turned a little different than other so pattern/design on grips don't match up.
