Okay.. First let me say that I can turn a wrench and take something apart and put it back together again. But I want to make sure that it is done right the first time.
Just went to the dealer and got some new grips. Read the install and it said to refer to the service manual. Of which I do not have at this point but I guess that I will have to invest in it in the near future. The left side seems straight forward but the throttle is the one I would like info on.. Anyone know what to look for and the do's and don'ts when replacing it.. The throttle is the only one I am worried about..
Just lossen those throttle cables. I don't think you have to worry about a spacer just replacing the grips. If I remember right , when I replaced mine I used a screw driver down at the throttle body and opened up the throttle to get a little extra length.
Did this a couple of weeks ago (with the manual). First thing is to make sure you put a5/32" piece of cardboard between the front brake lever and lever bracket to protect the front stoplight switch. Basically, squeeze front brake insert cardboard and release.
Second, don'tforce the throttle grip to far up the handlebar. This caused itto bind up on throttle idle return. The throttle wouldn't snap back to idle position. I backed the throttle down the handlebar 1/16-1/8 inch and it snapped back perfectly.
You definately want to install the spacer just in case. As for the throttle side you'll need to measure the threads exposed on the adjust cables, just roll up the rubber boot and you'll see them. You'll need a 3/8 open end and 8mm or 10mm open end to loosen the adjusters. The most important part is not to lose the brass bushings, they didn't take flight on mine but they were "fun" to get at. It took me about 10 mins to do the throttle side and it's not as major as it sounds. I replaced my stockers with ISO Grips and I can't wait to try them out. Also be sure to lube the cables and try the throttle once you re install everything to make sure nothing binds them..
Does having cruise control make a difference? I'm getting new grips and told my dealer I was going to install them myself. He said he recommended bringing the bike in to have it done by one of the wrenches in the shop because I have cruise control. He said normally it's straight forward but with cruise it's more difficult. Is he filling me full of BS or is he telling the truth?
I believe you want to go through the cruise control recalibration routine once the throttle grip is installed. If you need help on how to do that, let me know - I assume the 2005 model I have is fairly representative, or, I can look it up in the shop. Dealers like to try and get customers into their shops this time of year - work becomes mighty scarce when the temps drop this low - 5 deg F this morning - yuk.
