Purchased March 2009 brand new UC. I keep a fairly accurate cost records;
So far, I have spent $ 13,883.00 on added parts, oil changes, tires, maintenance, etc, etc. So, not counting insurance cost, interest on the loan payment I figure the bike has cost me near $ 35,000.00 so far. That is about $ 835.00 per month for 40 months. I could vacation in Hawaii for five days every month for 40 months for that amount of money. This is one hell of a love a affair with a machine.
My question is; is this about what others have spent for the same period of time on their bikes?

That is quite a bit more than I have spent on my 09. But hey, it is all subjective and it is your money after all. I think of it as therapy that keeps me between the fence rows.

I did same type of thing with my old LowRider, listed every thing on my computer. I had a list
of all modifications, part numbers, and the cost of every item even the pinstriping & oil all of
it. About five years of that I added it up, just the cost of chrome alone I could have bough a
new 883 low Sportster. When it was all said and done I had enough money into that one bike
I could have two of them. Now on my Road King Custom I don't want to know I just want to
ride it and enjoy it, and just make ita comfortable to ride. H-D=hundreds of dallors (o_o)

I quit keeping up with money spent on my bike a long time ago. The way I see it is I will spend it on something so I am happier spending it on my scooter than spending it on silly things like groceries, taxes, utility bills ect. Happy Trails...

I'm kinda afraid to keep track but I tend to mod/change a lot stuff when I get a bike. Hell I put over $4K in my $1100 drz400? Bought my current '09 cheap ($11K) knowing I'd change it and am sure I got at least $6-7K in it over the last year? But after that the costs go way down and I do go to Hawaii or where ever.

It is important to understand opportunity cost. There are always competing ways to spend money. It sounds like you might spend a premium but in the absence of the bike, what would be the cost of the things that you accomplished on the bike (ala trips, runs to the store, etc.) in the bike's absence.

62,000 miles on the 09 Road King that I bought new and traded-in November:
$7,987.00 in maintence during that time, including a Stage 1 upgrade
$4,500.00 in accessories, everything from Gopro camera, Tour-Pac, heated gear,etc
$12,487 dollars total in less than 4 years. I had two items on my bike that I called fluff everything else was function.
I thought I was set for distance riding and wouldn't have to repeat the buying process again, but somehow have managed to spend $500.00 in the last 2 months.
Riding the average mileage though my expenses would have easily been cut in half and then some so I don't consider the expense excessive.
