Take a 1 gallon antifreeze or oil jug. Lay it on it's side. Cut a big hole in the side that is up. make sure the cap is on tight. Lay the jug under the drain plug and remove the plug. Wait until oil is drained out. Keep a 5 gallon plastic bucket with a lid around. Take lid off 5 gallon bucket. Lay the 1 gallon jug on the edge of the bucket with the cap side in the bucket, remove cap and pour oil into the bucket. Wipe the 1 gallon bucket out real good with a shop towel(paper). Replace the cap on the jug and the top on the bucket. When bucket is full dispose of the oil in a responsible manner. I put the jug in a plastic bag to keep it clean.

+1 ... Been doing this for use on cars, trucks and farm equipment !
I have the HD drain pan and love it. You can drain everything at once and sit you old filter upside down on it and drain that too. Is $30 really too much to spend on your $25,000 bike? When it's full I dump it into a five gallon bucket I bought at Lowes for $5 with a lid and take it for disposal. The pan stands on end against the garage wall out of the way and doesn't leak all over the place. If you do get one and use it,don't forget to remove a corner vent plug along with the center plug.
I have the HD pan and like it. No mess, drain 3 holes, plug and take to the nearest oil change place and they empty it.... back to the garage stands in the corner..... saves a lot of mess.
I love mine so much I bought 2 of them...One for home and one for the shop at work...After the other techs saw how convenient it was...They bought one too.
My local dealer had 'em for $25.00 w/ purchase of oil & filter. Picked 1 up, haven't tried it yet, slides rite under my RK that's lowered on both ends.

Yeah it is. I use a $3 tupperware rectangular storage container with a lid. Pit a little cat litter or dirt in the bottom to keep the oil from sloshing around and when im done, I put the lid on it, take it to the closest autozone and dump it. Oh yeah, it holds all three tanks too. Best $27 I ever saved.
I use one every time I change the fluids in my bike. It is very convenient and works great. For the cleaning part, after I dump the oil into the bottles to recycle, I just take a some brake fluid and spray the top of the pan and wipe it clean with a rag.
