We have put together some pages with information about the various mobile phones and navigation apps on our web site. Use this thread to post up your own experiences using navigation on your bike. Be sure to tell us which mapping application you use and what kind of phone you have.

I have a two yr old Motorola Atrix. Sprint and Verizon also basically have the same phone with a different name. I have the car windshield mount for the phone and when it is in the mount, landscape mode, it acts as a GPS. Google maps with navigation, free, works flawlessly!!!

Being somewhat older, I was having difficulty seeing the screen on my phone for navigation. Readers didn't help, it was just at a distance where it was indistinct. By accident I found a solution. Good old Sams has sunglasses with a reader insert. What I found was if I bought the lowest (1.0) level of magnification I could see the screen sharply. I normally wear a 2.0+ magnification. These new ones aren't so good for reading distances but at the 18" to 24" range they work great. FYI, just need to see if I can get split lenses for my good shades.

Good info there from Cyclonecustom.

Some additional comments may help. Most of the apps reviewed depend on some sort of data connection and if you are in an area of poor/no coverage you can't use the nav app. Also depending on your data plan you may have limits on data consumption, so plan accordingly.

NavFree on the other hand requires no data connection, so will work anywhere/anytime. I agree the user interface is clunky. The maps are reasonably accurate, but take up a fair amount of storage space, so if you limit the maps loaded on your phone to only the state(s) you will be travelling it's not too bad. I don't find the ads to be a problem, especially if I'm not connected to a data source.

You may want consider NavFree as a primary or backup nav app. I've used it on both phone and tablet and it's worked well plus no data usage. So the upside may more than offset the downside. Note I have no business interest/affiliation with this or any other app.

Cheers
