Been there done that. My iphone was impossible to see in direct sunlight AND it's just small. The touch screen controls are way too small to be anywhere near safe for motorcycle use. Factor in that it's fragile and not waterproof and you have the makings of a $700 replacement if you kill it some how.

This is no serious substitute for the Zumos. There are cheaper "get by" solutions (nuvi, smart phones) but no substitute.

Now I do like using the phone to find stuff while I am standing there wondering where to eat lunch or dinner. It's certainly great for that. And it will even make phone calls to people too. (imagine that) But it's just a compromise on a motorcycle for navigation...and a dangerous one at that.

Galaxy S2 with Google Maps/Nav. Never lets me down.
Mounted on RAM X-Mount on bars.
I find if you tilt it down very slightly it reduces glare.
Bluetooth Slacker Radio at the same time.
Charges thru 2 amp plug, it's a multi media center. News updates via Stitcher.
Big screen helps, will move up to GS4 when available soon.

I had the GPS Drive "Cougar" voice on mine one day. She came on with the sexy voice saying "ok big boy, take a left turn". My wife was on the back and I think she got jealous of my GPS. One problem with the sexy voice is that she talks too slow. Sometimes I'm on the turn by the time she gets it out.

Cyclone,

You have a lot of good information on your site, then you add the anti-Apple rant by Dan Lyons.

Any reason why you added his rant to a page supposedly devoted to mapping apps? It really doesn't fit the theme of all the other articles on the page and distracts from an unbiased look at mapping software.

Currently I use GPS Motion-X Drive on my iPhone; when we went looking for a phone for my wife, we chose the GalaxyIIs (and went with google maps), so not a devoted fan of either the Apple or Android.

Cheers

Great source of information. Good options for people to choose from. I've been wanting the ability to make my own routes and save to GPS. Copilot Premium allows that option. Just upgraded to a Samsung Note 2 so my screen is bigger than the Magellan I've been using. Just need to get a RAM Aqua box for the Note 2, modify it to pass audio and power out the sides.

Most of the best rides in Oregon, where I most need navigation, are out of cell range. So, the phone based nav apps that need real time downloaded maps don't work. So, I went with the more expensive option of the Zumo 660...and am very happy with it.
