For me 18s and highway pegs are like sitting in a lazy boy. No more pain between the shoulders pushing it down the road 500 miles. But I'm 6'3". So if you go ape ( ) your height and arm reach will determine the bar heighth. Also, I have 3 different seats. Each affects my reach. The angle I set is for one of my seats. AND it looks good, but others prefer beach bar style. I sat on bikes at dealerships and on private bikes to help me pull the trigger.
I admit I did mine for looks but was surprised at how much more comfortable they are. Use to get shoulder pain after a few hours in the saddle. Last time I did 8 hours without any pain.
A big reason I did it was to straighten out my wrists. On an all day ride it was my wrists that would hurt first. My mini apes are more comfortable in every way on long and short rides. Plus they look freaking awesome! As a bonus I swear the stereo even sounds better since the speakers aren't blocked anymore.
I've had Apes on my last few bikes, mainly for comfort. But on my Superglide I went bigger, 18's, for style. They are still just as comfortable as the 14's and 16's I've had in the past. I am 5'11" and the apes with the forward controls is almost like lounging in a folding beach chair.
I put 15 inch bars on mine everyone told me that since i have a bad back that they would help I personally found that hard to believe for once i am glad i listened to everyone and installed a set it has been the best money i have spent not only do they look good but comfort is by far improved as far as handling i personally feel as if i have more control in tighter turns etc may be that im just riding more comfy so i think i have more
One side affect of apes is that you stop using punctuation. LOL!
I was surprised how comfortable they really were when I put 16" apes on my Fatboy. People everywhere would ask "how are those even comfortable?" but they were amazing to me but I'm 6'2". The control I had with those bars was amazing which is why I just bought 14" monkey bars for the SG.
Mine are called mini apes with being 10". I went with comfort because my RKC had taller bars which were 10"s. So now I have had a year under my belt on the SG and had to paint the inner also. I am going for comfort, but also looks will be a big plus
