Default Exhaust Question

Just bought a 2011 Ultra Classic and want to change the exhaust. I was told that 96 or bigger motors should use 4" mufflers to keep the heat down. Is this true or will 3.5" work the same.

The only way to keep the heat down is get rid of the cat. In addition to that get yourself some type of fuel management system. Contact Fuel Moto and they will solve your heat problems. You can also add a high flow AC while your making the other changes. You can go with either 3 1/2 or 4 inch exhaust it's more of a cosmetic choice. I started with just doing 4 inch Rineharts and the heat was terrible until I got rid of the cat.Call Fuel Motto.

Take a look at RC Components slip-ons (optional end caps to chose from). They look good and have a nice deep sound. They have both 3.5" and 4" dia. Not sure about reducing heat w/4". Call their tech support and see what they say.

I have 3 1/2" Rineharts on a 103. No heat problem if you get rid of the cat and install a tuner.

The cat, by design, creates a lot of heat, and the new HD's run very lean from the factory which also produces heat.

+1 on getting rid of the cat. Made a huge difference in heat.

Decatted and I use the Street Thunder 3.5" Performance slip ons. Got mine for $303 at the dealer because some of the packing on them slid and they had a small scratch. Put on the Piston End Caps. Nice tone. Stage 1 SE A/C and PowerVision. If you buy the PV1 buy it from FuelMoto. Absolutely the best service after the sale!! When I put in the SE255 cams on my '12 FLHTC they sent me a map no problems and it works.

I got rid of the heat on mine by putting on new head pipe --- Vance & Hines Power Duals. 3.5 or 4 inch slip-on doesn't make any difference.

You can use 3.5 or 4", the dealer gets more for the 4" so I'm sure thats what they are trying to sell you.
Depending on brand and what looks and sound your going for is how you should decide.
I'm getting ready to remove my 3.5 Rineharts and install the 4" because I keep reading that the 4" are a little quieter while cruising but nice and deep when you get on it or at idle. My 3.5 are loud all the time now that I've upgraded the engine and the pipes are pretty broken in. I am also getting rid of the horrible rinehart extreme headpipe that blocks the fluid cabs as well but that a whole other story.
